University Institutes of Technology
The main role of University Institutes of Technology (I.U.T.), which form part of the University system, is
to provide short, technology-based courses aimed at training skilled technicians.
The Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie (B.U.T) (University Bachelor of Technology) enables its holders either :
- to apply for positions in which they may serve as a link between engineers and the general workforce
- continue studies, involving management and further training later on.
The I.U.T. of Le Mans is composed of four departments :
- Business and Administration Management (G.E.A.) More information
- Chemistry (Chimie) More information
- Instrumentation and Measurement (M.P.) More information
- Mechanical Engineering and Production Technology (G.M.P.) More information
Various information
Other features of the teaching offered by the I.U.T. include :
- 2600 hours' tuition or 2400 hours'tuition plus internship periods in companies of 22 to 26 weeks, over 3 years
- the varied backgrounds from which students and teaching staff originate: holders of all types of Baccalaureat (High School Diploma) or equivalent diplomas, students with work experience or wishing to change careers, vocational training or in-work training, teacher-researchers, teachers and lecturers from industry.
- tuition given mainly in small groups leading to a high pass rate (12 - 14 students in specialised subjects)
- teaching methods combining induction, deduction, experimentation, continuous assessment, supervised project work, interdisciplinarity, work placement, work-release.
Industry is at the heart of the I.U.T. : its representatives
- sit on the Board of Governors
- participate in teaching through lectures
- organize visits in industry
- accept students for work placement
The students' work placement projects are profitable to all those involved. Each year, approximately 10 % of second year students take training abroad
After the Bachelor Diploma holders may :
- start work
- take further courses at an I.U.T. or other establishment
- continue studies in the 2nd cycle (School of Engineering, Degree diploma etc.)
I.U.T.'s offer a wide range of services. An I.U.T. can within the fields it specializes in, assist in studies, analysis, production or give advice.

WORK PLACEMENTS
What does the placement consist in ?
All students have to do work placements to complete their degree. The aim is for them to get hands-on experience and put into practice what they have learnt at college. Typical dates are, for the second-year placement, from early April until mid June (8 to 10 weeks minimum) ; for third-year degree level, early February until late May (12 to 16 weeks min).
Students should be given an assignment in relation to their degree and not just take part in the daily activities of the organisation, although this can obviously be part of the placement.
How do the organisation and the IUT interact ?
Before the placement
We can help you recruit your intern according to your needs, by short-listing applicants among our students.
The assignement can be discussed prior to the placement between the organisation and the teaching staff at the IUT.
The placement is confirmed by a training agreement signed by the organisation, the student and the IUT.
During the placement
Once the placement is confirmed, each student is assigned an academic tutor at the IUT, whose role is to make sure the placement is going well and to help the student with academic requirements, i.e. completing a report and an oral presentation that are particularly significant in the students’ final assessment.
Within the organisation, the intern will also have a supervisor.
The IUT tutor will either call or visit the supervisor during the placement.
